Advocate for the values of diversity, inclusivity, and social justice
For the competencies “Develop a critical understanding of changing demographics and the diversity of students, schools, and communities” and “Advocate for the values of diversity, inclusivity, and social justice”, I have chosen my “Multicultural Teaching Philosophy Statement” from EDCI 585 as an artifact. In this artifact, I give details of my teaching philosophy and how I treat and include students from any background in my classes. In my classes, I give all my students the chance to show their abilities or lack thereof so I can help them in any way that I can for that year whether it is personal or academic. I also give the background of my childhood and previous experiences that led me to this current mindset that I have today. One major contributor was my mom’s algebra experience. Her teacher would not answer her questions and made her feel stupid because it did not make sense to her. I vowed to never have a student leave my classroom feeling inadequate because I refused to help them. Using my education, work experiences, and connections with people, I used that to formulate the teacher that I am and mindset that I have for students who come into my classroom. This exercise was very beneficial for me to reevaluate my professional practice and my personal beliefs and make sure that they aligned. After writing this, the school year started up and I went into my classes this year with a new confidence and focus on my content matter but more importantly on what my personal goals were to help the kids see where my classes can impact them as people and help prepare them for their future.
